Deck Mass and Weight-per-Decibel Calculator
On a newbuild the selection argument is rarely about which floor is quietest. It is about how many tonnes of lightship weight each extra decibel costs across the deck area you are covering. Enter the area and pick a reference system, and the calculator converts areal weight into installed tonnes and into kilograms per decibel gained.
Deck inputs
Enter a deck area and press Calculate deck mass.
How the figures are derived
Installed mass
Installed mass is the published areal weight of the build-up multiplied by the deck area you enter. The areal weights are stated as maxima, so the result is an upper bound on the floor’s contribution to lightship weight rather than a nominal figure.
Weight per decibel
Weight per decibel divides the areal weight difference against the reference system by the Rw difference against that same system. It compares laboratory airborne indices, so it ranks build-ups against each other. It does not predict what a cabin will measure at sea, and where two systems have the same Rw the comparison returns no value rather than a made-up one.
